Summary

Allocating the right amount of tolerance is critical in ensuring manufactured parts will function, but how do you know how much tolerance to give?

Tolerance allocation starts with the part feature functional requirements, translates these into quantitative measures, which then allows the calculation of the required functional dimensions and tolerances.

Who should attend?

Designers, development, manufacturing and quality engineers.

How will I benefit?

By the end of the course, you should:
  • Be able to calculate critical functional tolerance values required on mechanical part
  • Be able to construct simple vector diagrams and perform simple tolerance stack analysis
  • Understand the basics of GD&T and know how to transition from plus/minus tolerancing to GD&T
  • Practice tolerance allocation through a series of worked examples including one of my own
Contributes 7 CPD hours

Key topics

  • Method for calculation of functional tolerance values
  • Vector diagrams and tolerance stack analysis
  • Calculation of tolerances for specific fits, clearances, interferences compressions and shifts
  • How plus/minus tolerancing and GD&T approaches differ and work
  • The basics of GD&T
  • Statistical tolerancing
