Communicating technical information in both written and verbal form is a key skill for all engineers to master. Focusing on the needs of the audience, which will determine the level of detail, the language and the structure is the starting point. Working out ‘what’s in it for them?’ and explaining the benefits of your findings help you influence the audience to support your proposals or projects. Then communicating this as clearly and concisely as possible adds to your credibility and levels of influence.

Who should attend?

Technical and managerial staff who:

  • Present to colleagues, internally and externally, but struggle to create engagement
  • Focus their technical presentations on things that interest them rather than are appropriate for what the audience needs to know
  • Attend meetings and don’t speak up in a way that gets them listened to
  • Struggle to appropriately respond when asked questions about their work, especially by senior management
  • Need to prioritise the important information they are seeking to convey

How will I benefit?

  • Make their material appropriate for their audience
  • Articulate the benefits for the audience
  • Communicate clearly and concisely
