Summary

This course will provide an insight into the metallurgy and types of stainless steels with some typical uses

The course provides a working knowledge of the production, processing and forming of a wide range of stainless steel grades - Austenitic, Ferritic, Martensitic, Duplex and Precipitation Hardening. The properties specific to each family are shown together with some typical applications. Technical considerations and their impact on processing and in-service performance are emphasized.

An overview of steel metallurgy is followed by examination of how steels corrode under aqueous and high temperature gaseous conditions.

The primary and secondary processes for blending stainless steel alloys and forming them into stock shapes are reviewed and the course concludes with shape forming, cutting and welding processes suitable for stainless steels in a wide variety of user applications.

This course provides a shared, technical understanding between engineers, those responsible for choosing which steel to use, procurement departments and marketing & sales professionals.
