Summary

The next iteration of this popular conference provides a technical forum for automotive engineers, OEMs, suppliers and researchers to share the latest developments and discuss the applications and commercial viability of hydrogen-based combustion engine and powertrains.

Since hydrogen production derives from renewable electricity, combustion engines can thus be considered as decarbonised powertrains in the same way as battery electric propulsion. Compared with EV batteries, hydrogen internal combustion engines are more affordable and fully compatible with applications requiring lengthy journeys such as heavy-duty vehicles, boats, and aircrafts, due to the limitations on equipment size and weight. However, further studies and research is still needed to resolve the remaining issues associated with hydrogen combustion processes, aftertreatment and safety.

Join to stay up to date with the latest developments in hydrogen internal combustion engine technology including engine operation, control, and integration, supported by case studies from the automotive, alternative fuels and aerospace sectors as well as from research laboratories and universities to gain insight on the current landscape and the new approaches that are being used globally.

Open call for presentations: closes 29 May 2026

We would like to invite you to submit a proposal to our open call for presentations.

Abstracts are up to 500 words and are submitted via the Oxford Abstracts portal. You will just need to log in or create a free account. The conference is organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), and all submissions undergo peer review. You do not have to be an IMECHE member to submit.

Topics include:

  • Hydrogen Propulsion Applications: direct combustion, fuel cell systems, hybrid configurations, and combined propulsion systems
  • High-Efficiency, Low-NOx Combustion: strategies and after-treatment solutions for hydrogen fuel
  • Engine Systems and Components: design and adaptation of injection, ignition, materials, and controls for hydrogen operation
  • System Integration: hybridisation, waste heat recovery, onboard storage and handling, Vehicle-Side Fuelling and Infrastructure Interface and integration with vehicle and fuel systems
  • Durability and Safety: material compatibility, lubrication, and long-term reliability for hydrogen operation
  • Pathways to Commercialisation: technical and economic assessments for achieving near-zero emissions in transport applications

To submit your proposal, please follow these steps:

  1. Click the link below to access the portal
  2. Create a free account or log in if you have submitted previously
