The two-day Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) global final event, featuring the Regional Speak Out for Engineering Finalists from 2020, will be hosted virtually on the 23 April and 24 April 2021.

To ensure the safety of our competitors, IMechE members, volunteers and employers the Institution continues to closely monitor the COVID-19 outbreak and, in line with UK Government and World Health Organisation guidelines, has implemented measures to mitigate the impact on our members, volunteers and staff around the world. This includes the transition to organise more of the Institution’s activities through virtual means.

Speak Out for Engineering, now in its 56th year, is a competition for young engineers designed to help develop verbal and visual communication in explaining technical mechanical engineering related subjects.

The two-part final will bring together the 2020 champions from  our seven Regions - Oceania, Americas, Europe, South East Asia, North East Asia, Southern Asia, UK & Ireland -  to battle it out one last time to be crowned the 2020 overall SOFE winner. A 20-minute pre-recorded video presentation from each of the finalists will be streamed lived, following which each competitor will participate in a 10-minute live interactive Q&A session. Ninety percent of the total marks will be awarded for presentation skills and 10% for technical content. The competition, after a short break for judges deliberation, will be followed by the award ceremony. Prizes, funded by the Institution’s Trustee Board Awards Committee, will be awarded to the winner and runner up: first prize £300 and second prize £200.

The award ceremony, conducted by President-Elect, Peter Flinn will be conducted immediately after the competition.

The judging panel for the event will include:

  • Peter Flinn, President-Elect – Head Judge and Award Presenter
  • Ankit Sharma, Chair International Young Members Committee
  • Fahim Islam Anik, 2020 Global SOFE inner.

Please join us in supporting our talented young engineers. Come along to support this event and gain knowledge across diverse mechanical engineering topics!
