Senior Aircraftman (SAC) Lewis Chatterton has been awarded the Institution of Mechanical Engineers award for the Best Overall General Mechanical Engineering Student for 2017.

SAC Chatterton undertook his training at the Royal Air Force School of Technical Training at St Athan, Wales.

Lewis said, “I’m delighted to receive this award, and am pleased that my hard work, and long nights of effort have been recognised”. SAC Chatterton now works in the Ground Engineering Flight at RAF Coningsby, and as a junior engineer can be called upon to work on a wide and challenging variety of ground support equipment.

The annual Institution of Mechanical Engineers award for top general engineering student at the No 4 School of Technical Training for the Royal Air Force, recognises the outstanding achievement of an individual who has successfully completed technical training within the field of mechanical engineering.

The relationship between the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Royal Air Force is a strong one with a well-developed path for individuals to achieve professional registration.

This award will further celebrate the achievements of young Royal Air Force engineering talent and raise awareness of the opportunities for students to gain recognition for their engineering skills and knowledge with a professional engineering institution.

Business Development Manager Jill Dwyer who presented the award on behalf of the Institution said, “This annual award recognises excellence in young students. The Institution supports engineers throughout their career and offers opportunities to learn and develop as well as to seek professional recognition. I’m very pleased to be here today presenting this award to Lewis.

The armed forces awards funded by the Educational Awards Committee are an important way to recognise the excellence of the engineering training and development within all three armed services. The awards highlight individuals who have excelled and shown dedication to their profession, and the process of presenting awards cements the strong relationship between the Institution and the armed forces.

The Station Commander at RAF Coningsby, Group Captain Mark Flewin said, “I’m delighted that Lewis’ hard work and commitment has been recognised by this award. Engineers remain vitally important to all that we do in the Armed Services, both at home and on operations overseas, and Lewis is a great example of a young and talented engineer who is at the beginning of an exciting and rewarding journey with the RAF."
