Read on to understand what Kiro sees as key factors in the decarbonization of the construction industry and an advanced look at some of the topics he will be presenting about in his presentation “Digitising construction plant”.
Please can you briefly explain your role and involvement in construction plant.
Kiro Tamer (KT): I head up the environmental sustainability function at Keltbray. This involves creating a vision and clear targets for the company for the company to reduce its potential impact to the environment and head towards Net-Zero. I do this with the support of the environmental team which is made up of environmental advisors, environmental nuisance advisors and utilities engineers.
What do you think is the number one challenge for organisations looking to reduce vehicle emissions in the construction industry?
KT: Technology. When an ultra-low or zero emission solution will become readily available and viable this will provide the industry to have a significant reduction to vehicle emissions.
What would you say is the technology to watch when it comes to construction plant development?
KT: Hydrogen.
What breakthroughs in terms of technology do we need for a cost-effective and net-zero construction sector in the future?
KT: Alternative fuels such as hydrogen, green ammonia or a fuel that can be made from renewable sources and easily transported and stored.
Do you think we can reduce emissions by using current plant more efficiently?
KT: Yes; operational efficiency can make a huge difference and it will be what we should all concentrate on for the next couple of years until a newer cleaner solution is available.
Why is it so important for construction professionals to attend this conference?
KT: The construction industry provides many opportunities for engineering excellence and construction plant is one of the key enablers for such achievements to be made. So it is key that construction professionals attend in order to be exposed and drive a more sustainable industry forward.
Construction Plant 2022 takes place on 28 June 2022 at One Birdcage Walk, the Institution’s London HQ
Presentations from vehicle and plant OEMs (including Volvo, Caterpillar, JCB and Liebherr) will outline new technologies and novel powertrains to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions, covering on-road mobile machinery, cranes, mining equipment, generators and much more.
These will be supported by case studies of recent construction projects across the UK from leading contractors and plant hire organisations, together with lessons learned and best practice for achieving more sustainable operations.
