Marcus Tse CEng

Product Risk Manager, Siemens Healthineers

MarcusTseWhat inspired you to be an engineer?

I think family has a vital influence on my career aspiration. My grandfather was a Chief Engineer who pioneered in undersea fibre optic cable designs with some other relatives specialised in engineering or manufacturing. I had a strong interest in exploring how machines work since I learnt to talk and my grandfather, my parents have been supporting me in developing problem solving and mechanical design skills. Over the years I converted my interest into academic, and eventually I fulfilled my childhood dream to become an engineer.

What is your current role and what do you do?

Currently I am working in the Magnetic Resonance division of Siemens Healthineers which designs and manufactures MRI systems. I am the Product Risk Manager accountable for the product safety and environmental sustainability of superconductor magnets from concept realisation to decommissioning of system, under the very strict medical device framework. The crucial tasks cover the entire lifecycle of the MRI from defining design requirement for R&D, analyse and approve designs, supplier liaison, post-market issue investigation, legal document submission etc.

Was it difficult to get your first job?

Going from a first degree to a PhD was fairly straightforward because I stayed at the same university. Securing my first job in industry was more difficult as it coincided with post dotcom stock market declines. I applied to a lot of companies and received a lot of rejections and relatively few interviews. I did cut down my options by applying to companies where I wanted to work and places where I wanted to live.

Why did you become a Chartered Engineer with the IMechE?

It began with a career talk at a year 12 school career planning event from an experienced engineer alumni. His career journey, ambition and dedicated career advice with me encouraged me to become a globally recognised, competent engineer. Throughout my university and career, I have always valued becoming a Chartered Engineer as a career milestone that I have wanted to achieve since high school. Fortunately, I received good support from my workspace and my mentors have been supporting me on CPD and ultimately achieving my goal.

What support and advice did you get during the application and interview process?

My direct manager who is a Fellow of IMechE had been supporting me by giving me advice and sponsored my application. I attended IMechE application workshops and received one-to-one coaching from Craig Davies, Membership Development Manager at the IMechE. Craig did not just review my application and provide tips for interview, but he boosted my confidence in pressing the submission button during our one-to-one conversation.

How has your membership helped with your Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?

The IMechE Library provides a wealth of technical journals, webinars, and industry reports that have kept me up to date with the latest advancements and best practices in engineering. The CPD recording has also enabled me to log and reflect on my learning activities systematically. Being member also helped me to connect with other industries gaining diversified perspectives.

How do you use the many member benefits that are open to you eg. training, events, library, networking?

I have been in dialogue with other members across various industries, gaining valuable insight outside of my work field. The library comes in very handy when I need to search for a specific topic.

How has being a Chartered Engineer helped you in your career?

Being a Chartered Engineers is an honour, a career milestone and a morale boost for me. Ever since I become Chartered, my increased confidence has enabled me to communicate my opinions with subject matter experts effectively, and my credentials are recognised by colleagues across the globe, as well as external government authorities that my outputs are trustworthy.
