Chair for the Professional Review Committee

United Kingdom

We are seeking a volunteer Chair for the Professional Review Committee (PRC), a key committee supporting the Institution's role as a licensed member of the Engineering Council.

Professional Review Committee

The Professional Review Committee (PRC) is one of the Institution's key governance committees and is responsible for overseeing decisions relating to professional registration. The Committee plays a critical role in enabling the Institution to meet its obligations as a licensed member of the Engineering Council and supports the Institution's strategic ambition to grow and develop its membership community.

The Chair provides leadership to the Committee, ensuring that decisions are fair, consistent, evidence-based and aligned with the Institution's professional standards. The Chair fosters an inclusive, respectful and effective environment in which diverse perspectives are welcomed, constructive challenge is encouraged and all members are able to contribute fully.

About you

Applicants must be professionally registered and demonstrate the leadership, judgement and behaviours required to chair a significant professional standards committee. Fellowship is welcomed but is not a requirement. Appointments will be made on merit, taking account of skills, experience, leadership capability and commitment to the Institution's values.

What you will do

We welcome applications from a diverse range of candidates who can demonstrate the skills, behaviours and leadership qualities required to chair an important professional decision-making committee.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate:

  • Strong leadership and chairing skills.
  • Sound judgement and the ability to make balanced, evidence-based decisions.
  • A commitment to inclusion, fairness and continuous improvement
  • The confidence to provide constructive challenge and address issues when required.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • An ability to build effective relationships and work collaboratively with volunteers and staff.
  • An openness to change, innovation and digital transformation.
  • An understanding of professional registration, membership standards and professional review processes, or the ability to develop this knowledge quickly.

How it works

Working collaboratively with volunteers and staff as one team, the Chair supports continuous improvement, digital transformation and the effective delivery of the Committee's responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and facilitate Professional Review Committee meetings, ensuring effective discussion, informed decision-making and clear outcomes.
  • Ensure the Committee exercises its delegated authority in accordance with the Institution's By-laws, Regulations and governance framework, maintaining fair, consistent and robust decisions relating to membership, Fellowship and professional registration.
  • Foster an inclusive culture where differing views are encouraged, respected and considered.
  • Model the behaviours expected of Committee members and address behaviours that undermine effective, respectful and productive working.
  • Work collaboratively with volunteers and staff to continually improve processes, outcomes and the applicant experience.
  • Support the Institution's programme of organisational and digital change, helping the Committee adopt new ways of working.
  • Develop and support Vice Chairs, Committee Members and future Committee leaders.
  • Act as the Committee's representative on the Qualifications and Membership Board, providing insight and advice on matters relating to professional standards, membership and registration.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of professional standards, registration processes and assessment approaches through engagement with Engineering Council activities, working groups, consultations and sector initiatives, as appropriate
