UK-SPEC 4th Edition

All applicants for registration and membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers are assessed against the standards as defined by the Engineering Council (EngC) in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). The 4th edition of the UK-SPEC was published on 1 September 2020, for implementation across the sector by 31 December 2021. The 4th edition is available here, with a summary of the key changes.

The 4th edition application forms and guidance documents for Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng), Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) are now live on our website.

Career Developer is the online portal that allows you to manage your professional development in a quick and easy way.

Career Developer can be used at any stage of your engineering career, whether you’re a practising engineer gaining competence through Initial Professional Development (IPD), or an experienced engineer that wishes to keep a record of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and career progression.

Depending on where you are in your career, you’ll need to use a certain tool – or complete an application form – before you can access some areas of Career Developer. Please choose the tool below that best applies to you.

Why use Career Developer?

  • It is personal to you, so it can stay with you throughout your career. It may be that as you change employers, your official development records get left behind
  • It gives you a downloadable record of everything you’ve done - and is a place to set goals and request future planning, assistance and feedback from experienced engineers in your sector
  • It is a very easy and straightforward way to log your IPD (MPDS tools and others) and CPD
  • It can help you maintain focus on your longer term career aspirations.

Completing your CPD

In today’s fast changing world, it’s become increasingly important that you continually update your skills. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is how professionally registered engineers can demonstrate this.

Completing your CPD doesn’t need to be a challenge. Our colleagues at the Engineering Council have created a short animated video to help explain the essential aspects of your CPD obligations, the methods of completion and how the process can be tailored around you.

How you record your CPD is up to you. You may even be doing it already.
