Make the most of careers events
Most of the key engineering graduate employers will have a presence at university careers fairs, and universities usually host specific careers events for engineers. You can find timetables of planned campus visits on many company websites, or you can contact your university’s careers centre to find out when they will be visiting. It’s worth looking at careers events at other universities in your city, as many are not limited to students of one particular university.
Take the time to look at a list of attendees at the fair before you go – if you can pinpoint a few companies you’d specifically like to speak to, then work out some questions to ask them beforehand; you’ll get the most out of the fair. It’s great to be prepared, and to show you know a little about their company, but if you don’t then don’t be shy! The representatives at careers fairs are there to answer your questions, and won’t mind even the most basic ones.
Finally, if you have any questions about a particular company’s graduate employment and they haven’t visited your university – ask them! It’s always good to make contact with potential employers, and they will be impressed that you’re keen to work for them.
