What is EngTech?
Engineering Technician or EngTech is a professional registration exclusively for technicians. It demonstrates to employers your competence and shows them that you work to a high standard.
Engineering Technician is one of three professional registrations awarded by the Institution alongside Incorporated Engineer and Chartered Engineer.

Jen Harvey, apprentice at MBDA, talks about the benefits of becoming an EngTech.

Benefits of EngTech for employers

This can help to retain valued members of staff, increase skill levels amongst employees, give a competitive edge within industry and aid the recruitment of skilled technicians.
How to become EngTech
If you meet the criteria to become an EngTech member, the rest is simple!
Registering as an EngTech involves a straightforward assessment of your qualifications and experience. There are two routes: An Approved Route or the Standard Route.
Approved Route:
If you are on an advanced/modern apprenticeship course that has been approved by the IMechE becoming registered as an EngTech is really straightforward. We approve courses which provide you with the necessary levels of skills, knowledge and experience that are required to become an EngTech. That means as soon as you finish your course you are eligible to apply.
Check our lists of approved courses to see if you can become an Engineering Technician by looking through the Approved EngTech Company Schemes and Approved EngTech Training Provider Schemes. The Engineering Council Technician Database also lists all IMechE approved schemes and qualifications.
If you have recently finished an approved apprenticeship or are about to, download an EngTech approved route application form in word or PDF.
If you are not on an approved scheme you may still be eligible to apply via the standard route
Standard Route:
If you have relevant work gained experience or academic qualifications suitable for EngTech, you can apply via the standard route, where you show us how you meet the relevant competences.
Download and fill in the EngTech Application and Registration form word or PDF and please refer to the guidance notes
