Writing your Quarterly Report

The Monitored Professional Development Scheme requires a progress report every quarter. The report should not be a diary of events but a critique of the objectives set and competence developed. Written in the first person and highlighting the contribution you have made towards the company's objectives, the report should avoid acronyms and company 'jargon'. It should be remembered that the reports from the final two years of the scheme will be used at the Professional Review Interview and, therefore, should be easily read by an engineer from outside your company and area of expertise.

At the beginning of each quarter, a formal meeting should take place with your mentor to decide on 2 or 3 company objectives to be achieved. These should be cross-referenced to the appropriate Training Objectives for students to be developed.

At the end of the quarter a draft of the report should be completed and reviewed with your mentor. Reports should be an analysis of the project or placement and should demonstrate:

·   the achievement, or possible failure to achieve, Company and IMechE objectives

·   what was learned from the project or placement

·   how could the placement or project have been improved

·   recommendations for improvement.

All reports must be dated and should include the mentor’s comments and signature. Mentor’s comments should focus on the achievement of objectives, your personal development and where appropriate, any learning opportunity missed. This will help you to evaluate the potential in each placement or project.
