Not on MPDS and want to become registered as a Professional Engineer?
Many applicants successfully become a Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer through routes other than the Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS). The most popular of these is called the Traditional Option. Simply collect and record all the evidence you need to demonstrate that you meet the requirements of EC UK-SPEC and apply for professional registration when you feel that you are ready. The professional development website,
PD-How 2 , will assist you to structure your progress.
In order to become a Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer through the IMechE you need to:
- 1) Meet the IMechE academic requirements
This could be achieved by successful completion of a degree accredited by the IMechE or the equivalent. If you are not sure if you meet the academic requirements please contact the Membership Department
-
- 2) Meet the competence requirements for Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer
These competences are developed during the engineer's career and will usually take a minimum of four years for CEng and three years for IEng.

- Advice on your draft Professional Review Report
- If you are working on your draft Professional Review Report and feel that you need some pointers or advice on the content or layout please email a soft copy of your draft to PRRadvice@imeche.org and we will arrange for a Chartered Engineer to take a look at what you have written to date and comment on it.
Online Support System
We are currently developing an online reporting framework to use while you are completing your IPD. This will help you to plan, do, review and report on your progress even if you are not registered on MPDS. If you have any ideas that you would like us to consider as part of this development please email ipd@imeche.org
Membership Surgeries
Our Professional Registration team will spend a full day on-site meeting all those of your engineers who may be qualified to join IMechE, but who may need individual advice. We will talk you through our membership requirements and plan a way forward with you, so that you may achieve registration as a professional engineer.
The day starts with a brief presentation giving an overview of the membership application process and the paperwork required. Then continues with a series of 15 minute private consultations. The maximum number of private consultations per day is 14 (minimum five). A Professional Development Advisor, who is a Chartered Engineer, will be on hand to give specific advice
We will require a room large enough to accommodate attendess for the general presentation. A projector, a screen and internet connection to www.imeche.org. Plus a smaller room for the individual appointments
