Advice on IPD routes to membership

Not on MPDS and want to become registered as a Professional Engineer?

Many applicants successfully become a Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer through the IMechE via routes other than MPDS. The most popular of these is called the “Traditional Route”. On this route there is no requirement to register with the IMechE, no requirement to be a member of any kind until you are successful (although if you are you will receive information through the IMechE magazine which may help your application) and you do not have to have a mentor (although it can help if you do). You simply collect and record the information and evidence that you need to demonstrate that you meet the requirements and apply when you feel that you are ready. The professional development website ( PD - How 2 ) will assist you in collecting the appropriate evidence.

In order to become a Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer through the IMechE you need to:

  1. Meet the IMechE academic requirements
This could be achieved by offering a degree accredited by the IMechE or the equivalent. If you are not sure if you meet the academic requirements please contact the Membership Department
  2. Meet the competence requirements for Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer  ( competence statements )
These competences are developed during the engineer's career and will usually take a minimum of four years for CEng and three years for IEng.

If you would like to find out more about your progress towards Chartership you may wish to book a Membership Surgery:
