Leading Individuals and Engineering Project Teams (EMCI Domain 4)

2-day course
September 23rd-24th 2008

ASME for IMechE

DESCRIPTION

There’s a lot more to management than many engineers may think. Providing motivation, understanding team dynamics, and picking the right people for the job differentiate a boss from a leader. It’s the leaders who actually get "this" done, whether they’re managing individuals or teams. This course gives engineers and other technical professionals the tools they need to be effective managers in their organizations. Those tools include supervisory skills such as organising, delegating, training, coaching and counselling. The course covers the entire process of selecting and managing a team, including understanding team dynamics, selecting team leaders and team members, managing cross-functional engineering teams, and evaluating team performance. The typical causes of conflicts, and proven techniques to resolve them, are also covered. The course provides a basic knowledge of recruitment, selection, and compensation practices, including compliance with the latest federal, state, and EEOC fair selection regulations. Diverse workforce issues such as regional and cultural differences, and fair management regulations and practices regarding race, gender, and age, are also discussed.
