The Engineering Council states that "All Engineers will be committed to the needs for adapting to change, and to continuous improvement to their performance as professionals. Continuous learning and CPD will be an integral part of this process."
Continuing Professional Development contributes positively to your personal and business success and is a driving force for change related to innovation and quality for the benefit of the wider community. After achieving Chartered status as an Engineer (company’s own scheme; IMechE’s Monitored Professional Development Scheme or similar); you are required by the IMechE to maintain and enhance your professional knowledge, skills and competency in your field.
CPD is a methodical framework of learning and development activities which ensure your continued development as a professional engineer. CPD does not merely mean attending courses, but takes place in a number of contexts and a variety of activities. Continuity is important for CPD and it is considered a life-long practice as long as you remain professionally engaged.
Increasingly the professional Institutions are placing greater emphasis on formalised and systematic means of ensuring that professional members are keeping up to date with developments in their field.
Whilst The IMechE is not prescriptive as to the content, approach or effort an individual puts into their development, it is expected you will put effort into a self-managed, structured approach to further learning. We offer services, advice and support as to best practice. The IMechE is investing in the CPD service and it is advisable to check back to this page regularly for latest developments and news.
