Volunteering for Membership

Increase your involvement with the Institution through volunteer work with Membership

Industrial Advisor: the IA undertakes peer assessment of a candidate where an interview is not normally required. The IA will be appointed by the Professional Review Committee as an expert in their field of industry.

Interviewer: the interviewer carries out peer assessment of an applicant’s written submission and performance at a Professional Review Interview. Interviewers should be able to commit to two days of interviewing per year and one day of training every two years.

Committee Member: several committees exist to carry out the different aspects of the membership process and perform these basic functions in addition to driving policy and improvements:

  • accreditation visits at universities
  • MPDS approval visits in companies
  • assessment of individual academic portfolios
  • review all corporate applications against set criteria
  • arbitration and appeals

The Committees meet quarterly and members would be required to attend at least half of the meetings each year. They would also need to be able to commit to work outside of the committee meeting, which could involve paper-based reviews or travelling to various locations in the UK.

Technical Report Option: the assessors and mentors, experts in their fields, assist applicants who do not have the exemplifying academic requirement for registration, but have the necessary experience, to write a report and demonstrate that they have the knowledge and understanding of engineering principles to the appropriate level.

Training is provided for all volunteer roles. For further details, email membership@imeche.org or call our Helpline 08452269191.
