Government must ensure £32 billion for HS2 is investment in UK jobs and skills say engineers

January 10, 2012

Philippa Oldham, Head of Transport at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers said in response to the Government's announcement to go ahead with the HS2 project:

“This is welcome news for UK engineering and the UK economy more generally. It will help revitalise the country’s creaking transport infrastructure and take the UK railway system into the 21st century.

“But Government must ensure that the £32 billion that will be designated to HS2 is also an investment into UK jobs and skills – the country needs to invest in and nurture its engineering talent.

“It is positive that plans include linking up not just London and Birmingham to the High Speed network but also Leeds and Manchester – all critically important hubs for UK trade and business.”
