Voice of the profession 2011

Media and political coverage 2011

We want to ensure mechanical engineers are given a voice. Providing informed comment on breaking news, working with Government and offering insight through our reports and events, are some of the most effective ways to demonstrate to the public the vital role mechanical engineers fulfil in society.

In 2011 the Institution ran a number of projects and events which helped attract media and political attention - from Formula Student and Manufacturing Excellence, to the Engineering Heritage Awards and the Institution's work with the Bloodhound SuperSonic Car.

The Institution was also able to provide insight and clarity on breaking news stories like the damage caused by the Japanese tsunami to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear facility, or when volcanic ash once again spread over the UK in May and the Institution's reports on subjects as varied as population, aerospace, manufacturing and energy have promoted vital industries, sparked debate and shaped Government policy.

During the course of 2011 the Institution made 82 television and radio broadcast appearances, featured in 106  national press articles and 802 regional press articles; while 115 Westminster Parliamentarians and 30 MSPs attended Institution briefings.
