Jaguar Land Rover will reportedly thousands of workers at its Castle Bromwich plant on to a three-day week amid ongoing pressure on the business and concern around Brexit.
The move from the UK’s biggest carmaker, which follows a cut of 1,000 jobs in nearby Solihull, comes after repeated warnings from the company about the potential negative impacts of a ‘hard’ Brexit or a ‘no-deal’ result and confusion over the government’s policy on diesel engines.
“In light of the continuing headwinds impacting the car industry, we are making some temporary adjustments to our production schedules at Castle Bromwich,” a spokesperson said.
“We are, however, continuing to over-proportionally invest in new products and technologies, and are committed to our UK plants in which we have invested more than £4bn since 2010 to future-proof manufacturing technologies to deliver new models.”
Local Labour MP Jack Dromey blamed “a combination of Brexit chaos and the mishandling by ministers of the transition from diesel. Brexit now threatens the jewel in the crown of British manufacturing excellence.”
