A new maintenance and repair hangar at Gatwick Airport will support hundreds of jobs and bring widespread economic benefits, Boeing has claimed.

The aerospace multinational secured planning permission for the facility from Crawley Borough Council last night.

A new graphic rendering shows the scale of the hangar, where workers will maintain and repair aeroplanes for European commercial airline customers.

The facility will create about 100 direct jobs and an additional 100 indirect jobs in the area, Boeing claimed. The company said construction work will also support 475 jobs and contribute about £80m to the local economy, with a further £135m expected from hangar activities over 20 years.

Boeing expects construction to start later this year and the hangar to be ready for an early 2019 opening.
