Please briefly explain your role, involvement, and experience regarding the International Conference on Turbochargers and Turbocharging 2023

Herve Martin (HM): This is my first time on the organising committee as a representative of Accelleron (formerly ABB Turbocharging), which has always been an active participant in this conference. For me, this is a great opportunity to meet new colleagues from the turbocharging community, and working in the organising committee has proved to be very collegial and interesting.

What is the top challenge facing your industry at present?

HM: Our company is part of the large engine industry. One of the biggest challenges in the coming years is the expected switch to alternative fuels to meet increasingly stringent greenhouse gas targets. This requires the adaptation of turbochargers to significantly new boundary conditions, while maintaining a coherent product portfolio for all existing customer platforms.

How would you say your industry has evolved over the past two years?

HM: The large engine industry has weathered the pandemics well, as large engines play a key role in stabilising the electricity grid and powering transport (shipping and rail freight). There is also a strong commitment to achieving ambitious climate targets, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, which is leading to renewed cooperation between all industry players.

What developments are going on in your industry that may have an impact on the development of future approaches to turbocharging systems?

HM: In addition to adapting our products to upcoming alternative fuels, we are continuously developing our core components to increase their performance while reducing specific costs. Digitalisation (of products but also of business models, such as in the service business) and new manufacturing technologies are two of the megatrends affecting the industry.

Which other speakers and presentations are you looking forward to hearing at the forthcoming seminar?

HM: Given the wide range of presentations on the programme, it is difficult to pinpoint specific speakers or presentations! Personally, I am very interested in all content related to the energy transition.

Why is it important for engineers and industry to come together at this event and share best practice?

HM: As well as providing engineers with key insights from the papers presented, such a venue is a fantastic opportunity to network within the turbocharging community.

This year's International Conference on Turbochargers and Turbocharging will take place on 15-16 May 2023 in London

Be a part of the discussons about the future of turbocharging, with presentations in 2023 covering alternative fuels, electrification, hydrogen IC engines, the implications of European Emissions Legislation Euro 7 and Euro6e and much more.
