With mere weeks before the Managing Ageing Assets conference, presenter Bruce Cletheroe explains why he is keen to be involved.

For further details and to register your place, please visit the event website.

Please provide us with a brief overview of your current role and how it exposes you to ageing assets?

Bruce Cletheroe (BC): I am AWE’s internal independent assurer of their facilities. I ensure that AWE have suitable strategies to manage both extant ah=ging facilities and also their future new facilities.

What do you see as the key priorities for engineers faced with this challenge?

BC: Aging is a bathtub curve and as businesses seek to sweat assets, and compounded by obsolescence, it prove harder for engineers to keep facilities available.

What new strategies or projects in asset management do you think have the potential to change things for the better?

BC: Improved condition monitoring will allow engineers to justify sweating assets for longer.

What are the risks for organisations who don’t take a proactive approach?

BC: They will lose capability and hence cease to have viable businesses. But, sweating assets does not come for free, and a balance of investment will be needed.

What motivates you to organise this event?

BC: This is a “here and now” issue that nearly every business needs to proactively deal with; we all need to learn from each other (“fail fast” and learn).

Which topics or speakers are you most looking forward to?

BC: Any that deal with buildings, site infrastructure or production (or science) capabilities; these will relate most closely to my day job.

Why is it so important for engineers to come together at this conference?

BC: This is a common issue to all of us; we need to show (as a community) that we can add value to our businesses and the UK.
