Made in Britain: engineers identify 21 of the best UK manufacturers

Shortlist for the Manufacturing Excellence programme released

MPs need look no further to find the best in UK manufacturing for Vince Cable’s Made in Britain project, as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers has today identified 21 of the best manufacturers in the country.

Stephen Tetlow Chief Executive of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers said:

“It’s fitting that following Vince Cable’s call for MPs to find examples of great manufacturing around the UK, we can announce this list showing the quality, variety and ingenuity of UK manufacturing.”

“Manufacturing is at the heart of the UK economic recovery, and Manufacturing Excellence is a proven way to help improve the way businesses work and showcase their achievements.”

The 21 companies shortlisted are: 2K Manufacturing, AESSEAL, Agfa Graphics, Bombardier Transportation, Brother Industries, Carl Zeiss NTS, Draeger Safety UK, Flybrid, Howden Compressors Limited, Kingspan Insulation, Leyland Trucks, Loadhog, MBDA, Michelin Tyre, Palintest, Pipex Limited, ScotAsh, Soil Machine Dynamics, Survitec Group, Texecom Limited, Trend Control Systems.

As part of the Manufacturing Excellence programme companies are asked to conduct an in-depth self assessment and those who complete one or more of the eight parts receive a free, bespoke and confidential benchmark report. The best companies in each module receive a visit from a team of expert assessors who verify the audit responses and offer practical advice and suggestions for the business. The winning companies in each category then receive an award at the 2011 MX Ceremony  in London in November.

Entry to Manufacturing Excellence is free as it is supported by PwC, Autodesk, PP Business Improvement, The ERA Foundation, Lombard, WMG, Arup, and Barclays Corporate.

Manufacturing Excellence is endorsed by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Manufacturing Excellence is the most successful and long established manufacturing awards programme in the UK, and the only one that provides such a detailed benchmarking and assessment process to help improve your manufacturing businesses.
