I graduated last year – when can I apply for CEng/IEng?

When you apply for Membership and CEng/IEng, you will be assessed against the UK-SPEC competences . Although there is no specification for the amount of time you need to have been in post to meet the competences, a period of at least 4 years is deemed necessary to gain the competences at the required level for CEng and 3 years for IEng.

Who can sponsor me?

Your 2 sponsors must be CEng or IEng registrants with the Engineering Council, although they do not have to be Members of IMechE. For MPDS applicants, 1 sponsor should be your mentor. Where applicants reside overseas, 1 sponsor can be a Eur Ing or an Engineer recognised under the Washington or Sydney Accords.

How should my sponsors complete the sponsor forms?

Your sponsors should be personally familiar with your work. They should complete the boxes giving succinct examples of how you meet the competences – a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer is not sufficient. Each sponsor’s assessment should be made independently.

Where can I be interviewed?

We hold interviews throughout the UK – London, Bristol, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Belfast, Newcastle, the North West, and the East and West Midlands. Please indicate on your application form which venue you would prefer. If you live outside the UK and wish to be interviewed in your home country, we can arrange this on an individual basis, but this may take more time to arrange than UK-based interviews.

I’ve had my interview – when will I hear the result of my application?

The interviewers make a recommendation to the Professional Review Committee, who then make the final decision on each individual application. The Committee meets quarterly – normally in late January, early April, early July and early October, so you will be advised of the result of your application, in writing, shortly after one of these meetings.

Will I get a certificate when I’ve been made a Member?

An order form where you can order a hand-calligraphed certificate for £20 will also be included with your congratulatory letter . These certificates are available only for Corporate Members or Fellows of IMechE.

How is CEng/IEng linked to membership?

IMechE has maintained the link between Corporate Membership and Engineering Council registration as either a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer. To gain membership of IMechE, you have to meet the standard of either IEng or CEng, both academically and professionally. Once you have gained your membership, you can choose not to become an IEng or CEng, if you wish.
