Professional registration: Professional requirements

As well as meeting the academic benchmark for professional registration, applicants must also demonstrate that their professional engineering experience meets the competences set out by the Engineering Council's UK-SPEC. To apply for professional registration through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a strong mechanical engineering bias is required.

Use our benchmarking tool to assess your current competence against EC UK-SPEC and begin to planning your professional development.  You will need to have a membership number to access this area.

To illustrate how the competences may be met within a particular industry, the Institution has developed a set of industry-specific competence profiles. They should act as guidance to applicants, mentors, assessors and committees, and anyone involved in the application process.
