Upgrade your membership

Make sure that you are at the correct membership level that reflects your role and experience.  If you need to upgrade your membership, here are the options available:

Student to Graduate

If you have graduated from university with a suitable degree in engineering or a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subject, you can upgrade from affiliate membership to associate membership, and gain the letters AMIMechE after your name.

Associate to full Member

The Institution's Member grade is for professionally registered engineers and has three separate classes that recognise different levels of knowledge and skill:

• Chartered Engineers
• Incorporated Engineers
• Engineering Technician

Member to Fellow

Senior engineers who are eligible to be, or are already registered as EngTech, IEng or CEng, can upgrade from Member to Fellow. You simply have to show your leadership qualities or specialist engineering knowledge as well as a commitment to and passion for the engineering profession. Fellows can use the letters FIMechE after their name.
