Industry Competence Profiles

Competence profiles have been developed by IMechE to provide guidance to applicants, mentors, IMechE assessors and committees, and anyone involved in the membership application process.

The profiles have been divided into sections – one for each Industry Classification, which includes an overview of the mechanical engineering activities likely to be involved in that area, common requirements for election or transfer to the class of Member, detailed competence descriptors and some examples of appropriate Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities. However, they are not definitive and individuals working in other ways and completing different activities may be eligible.

Appended to each section are Case Studies illustrating the actual progression of applications, from candidates who were judged to have reached or exceeded the minimum competence levels – and who therefore became Members.
