Universities Seeking Accreditation
IMechE is licensed by the Engineering Council to accredit programmes from universities and colleges as leading towards CEng or IEng registration.
IMechE accredits against output standards as defined by UK-SPEC (UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence) and can award a maximum period of five years’ accreditation following a visit, at which time the next accreditation visit should be scheduled.
IMechE is happy to participate in or arrange joint accreditation visits with other Engineering Bodies (eg IET, RAeS etc) and is a member of the Engineering Accreditation Board (EAB); for more information visit http://www.engab.org.uk/
An IMechE accreditation visit:
- consists of one submission stage (for re-accreditation visits), the “Output Standards Form”, which should be completed at least 12 weeks before an accreditation visit date. All forms can be requested by contacting DegreeAccreditation@imeche.org
- Will comprise one full day and one pre-evening meeting with key members of staff
- Will be made by a team of X2 Academics, X1 Industrialist and X1 Staff Support Member
- Will be held during term time so that the visiting team can meet staff, students and visit supporting facilities and laboratories
- Will be followed up with a visit report which will be presented to the Academic Standards Committee; the Committee will decide on awarding accreditation – the visiting panel on the day will not be able to confirm any decision
