FAQs

What is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv)?

CEnv is the highest level of professional registration available for environmental practitioners. The designation recognises the demonstration of and commitment to sustainable environmental management and development. The qualification is awarded by the Society for the Environment (SocEnv) and demonstrates proven knowledge, experience and commitment to professional standards in the environmental field.

What does the Society for the Environment (SocEnv) do?

The Society for the Environment (SocEnv) aims to deliver their vision through better understanding and awareness of sustainable environmental management, standards and practice for the public benefit. By drawing on and pooling the knowledge and experience of the constituent bodies and their members, SocEnv will:

  • Regulate the profession of environmental practice through the Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) qualification
  • Seek to influence government, policy makers and opinion formers on all aspects of the environment and sustainability.

Why should I become a CEnv?

As an environmental practitioner, you will be aware of the significant global environmental challenges that face us all. With public expectation and demands on your knowledge and experience increasing, you need to demonstrate your professionalism with ever-greater rigour and transparency. CEnv does this by providing an independently-regulated qualification that cuts across all professional disciplines.

What qualification do I need to register as CEnv?

The application process uses a points system to score your level of environmental knowledge and experience and assess your eligibility. A minimum of 12 points are required.

A minimum of 4 points must be gained from relevant practical experience. It is possible to accrue all 12 points from practical experience.

A maximum of 8 points can be accrued from academic study (PDF, 46Kb).

£65 for the SocEnv application and annual subscription
£29.50 IMechE administration charge

Do I have to be a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers to register as CEnv?
