Points of View...
Lee Guillan, M IMechE Switzerland: ‘‘In engineering we need both vocational skills and academic skills, and many people fit between the two. Not everybody fits in either the academic or practical box, and as long as the system caters for people who can progress both academically and professionally, then the profession and industry will benefit in the longer term.’’
Rajesh Sharma, Fleet Support Engineer: ‘‘I am a qualified engineer and have successfully secured an engineering position to advance my career. I strongly believe my success is mainly based on the apprenticeship I pursued. There are hundreds of graduates who do not have a clue about practical/ industrial activities! Apprenticeships are NOT a poor cousin to degree but a rich and advanced option in my opinion.’’
Ian Allard, M IMechE: ‘‘At 54, I realise that the best training I had was my formal apprenticeship. It has given me an invaluable practical understanding of engineering. As a country, we are obsessed with getting everybody ‘Degree Qualified’. To suggest that an apprenticeship is a poor cousin of a degree simply risks alienating a whole section of society. Everybody has a contribution to make to the system and should be valued.’’

"Engineers take a sensible approach to reducing energy consumption. They do not need Government or Local Council pressure to reduce their consumption." - Robert Younghusband (Member)
“ I live in a timber framed bungalow called a "Heatkeeper". It's mechanically ventilated during the heating season drawing air in from the loft through a heat exchanger and then passes through a heater battery supplied with water, electrically heated overnight on the 7 hour tariff." - Alan Foster, Member IMechE/ Fellow IET
“I switched my electricity provider to one generating from wind power (which costs the same and the promise is for each kWhr I pay for they promise to generate the equivalent from wind (or other green) sources." - John Heppenstall
