George Stephenson Lectures
The George Stephenson Lecture is one of the Institution of
Mechanical Engineers' most important lecture series. The George
Stephenson Research Fund was established in 1923 to commemorate the
First President of the Institution. It finances the George Stephenson
Research Prize which is awarded annually to the author or authors of an
original paper published by the Institution in the previous year. In
1988 it was decided to establish the George Stephenson Lecture, also to
be supported by the fund. The criterion for the lecture is that it is be
delivered to a society outside the United Kingdom on subjects
prescribed by the Council. In more recent years it has become the
tradition that the President of the Institution presents this lecture.
To date it has been presented in more than thirteen different countries
around the world and has encompassed wide ranging topics such as
education, alternative engines, offshore engineering, railway
engineering and pressure vessel technology.
