Transport policy statements

Life Cycle Analysis

This position statement looks at current measures in place to reduce vehicle emissions, and how ‘Life Cycle Assessment’ (LCA), by examining all the stages of a car’s life, could improve upon the current methodology.

Electric Vehicle Recharging Infrastructure

The UK Government has made a commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% in a little over four decades. Transport currently produces about a quarter of the UK's total CO2 emissions, with road transport contributing over 80% of this. The Institution firmly believes that electric vehicles are an important part of the UK's motoring and low-carbon future. However, with consumers slow to trade in their petrol cars, we look at what recharging options are available to drive the take-up of electric vehicles.

Road Pricing

Traffic has increased by 81% in the last 25 years. The resultant congestion has serious impacts on the economy, our quality of life and overall emissions from transport. Something needs to change. This statement discusses the potential for a completely new system of road pricing.

Air travel: Third runway?

In January 2009, the Government declared its intention to allow a third runway and sixth terminal at Heathrow. At the time the Institution supported the decision, but thought the policy should have included far more stringent emissions caps.

Freight

Congestion is getting worse, emissions show no sign of abatement and our economy is faltering. The situation is so bad that we waste £10 billion per annum stuck in traffic. This statement looks at how transforming the way we handle freight in this country can get Britain moving, reduce our emissions and increase our productivity.

Electric Vehicles

While the UK automotive sector suffers in the face of falling demand, is it time we woke up to the potential for electric vehicles to both reduce our carbon emissions and secure UK manufacturing jobs? This statement looks at what can be done to ensure electric vehicles deliver.

The Carbon Challenge

Carbon emissions from transport account for nearly a quarter of all the UK’s emissions. If we aspire to reduce our total emissions by 80%, our transport systems have a huge role to play. Here we look at carbon emissions from across the transport modes and in the passenger and freight sectors.
