Call for papers: engineering competence
Managing risk. Delivering engineering guidance for safety and reliability
The Safety and Reliability Group are organising a one day seminar entitled ‘Managing risk. Delivering engineering guidance for safety and reliability’on 5 February 2013 at One Birdcage Walk, London.
Mechanical Engineering is about managing risk, the application of techniques, methods, processes and standards to design, build operate and maintain systems to the benefit of society.
The Safety and Reliability Group (SRG) continues to look at the guidance needed by engineers for managing risks both in safety and reliability. Allowing them to develop and apply process and systems to their particular industries and enhancing the value of the engineering done.
SRG is the group within the IMechE to set the standard in terms of the competence of Engineers working in the field of safety and reliability.
Engineering productions or operational establishments requires attention to a range of aspects which has been summarised in the Dependability Cycle below (‘Ring of Confidence’)
Effective application of study programmes in any of these areas is built on the competence of the engineers taking part.
The seminar plans to look at the needs and support for engineers, the programmes that exist to build competence and ensure that safety critical activities at all stages are recognised and supported by suitably trained, knowledgeable and informed Engineers.
To support the programme, we are inviting contributions to present papers on competence for safety and reliability.
What are the competencies that mechanical engineers should work towards? Are there frameworks that we should adopt as guidance for our engineers? What are the key features of an effective framework for engineering safety?
Closing date for abstracts is Friday 25 May 2012 – authors of accepted papers will be notified by end of June.
