Student Competition 2012

The EMHD Annual Medical and Health Engineering Student Project Competition is the foremost medical engineering student project competition in the UK and provides an opportunity for students across a wide variety of disciplines to present their work. The competition expanded in 2012 to include entrants presenting health technology projects, and a new poster presentation category.

Winner - Dr. Eliesmaziah Alias, University of Liverpool
Polyurethane as a substrate for cell transplantation in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

Dr Eliesmaziah Alias has just completed her PhD in the Department of Eye & Vision Science at the University of Liverpool. Previously, Eliesmaziah studied pre-clinical medicine at the Imperial College, London before completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering BSc. with the Open University. She subsequently gained a distinction in an MSc. in Medical Engineering with the University of Liverpool.
In the Department of Eye and Vision Science the non-clinical and clinical scientists from a range of backgrounds work closely together studying the mechanisms, prevention, early detection and treatment of eye diseases including research themes on Advanced Cell-based Therapies and Ophthalmic Bioengineering. Eliesmaziah's PhD project was kindly jointly sponsored by Biomer Technology Ltd. who also supplied the polyurethane used in the research and the EPSRC via the Health Technologies and Medicines KTN. She is continuing to work closely with industry and clinical colleagues to take the next steps to translate this research into clinical practice.

Winner Masters Category - Esfandiar Khaleghi, University of Birmingham
Further investigation of a research project “Innovative seating systems”

Poster            Presentation

This paper presents an investigation of a research project titled "Innovative Seating Systems" by BMW Group "Research and Technology" Team. It is based on my idea and reports about "Benefits of using Bionic Seats in Roadster cars" which is submitted and accepted by BMW Group Co-Creation Lab in March 2010. In this paper, three BMW Group revolutionary innovative seating systems, Bionic Seat, Ergo Seat and Formfitting seat Space Comfort Shell will be investigated in terms of comfort and safety. They will be studied and examined by various virtual applications to visualize their reactions and finally be judged. These three conceptual seats will be utilised and tested by current massaging systems, Active and Passive Safety options as well. Moreover, whiplash effect during rear impact and its occurrence probability would be calculated. - This work is done under BMW Group Research and Innovation Centre.

Winner Undergraduate Category - John Ong Xue Guang, National University of Singapore
