Terms of Reference


The overall aim of the Tribology Group is to promote a national focus for tribology and its practitioners within the objectives and interests of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Key priorities for the Group are to:

  • stimulate the creation and transfer of tribological knowledge.
  • promote an understanding of the benefits arising from the application of tribological principles.
  • further tribology teaching and research throughout education.
  • provide a focal point for practitioners of tribology and for those seeking knowledge of tribology.

These will be progressed through:

  • The organisation of conferences, lectures, seminars, training courses and workshops.
  • The recognition of high achievement in tribology.
  • Communication and collaboration with the Divisions and Groups of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
  • External communication and collaboration with learned societies and other organisations with an interest in tribology, Government Departments and the International Tribology Council.
  • The support and promotion of the Journal of Engineering Tribology, Part J of the Proceedings of the Institution.
  • The development of the Group’s website as a valuable resource for visitors to the site.
  • The creation of a database of members with an active interest in tribology.
