The James Bates Grants (Serial 201 RDYM) are funded from The General Fund.

Trust Conditions:

Bequest of £8,000 under the Will of the late James Bates (Member, 1923-1958). Award Conditions: Grants may be made by the Young Members' Board to promote mechanical engineering and the professional development of young members of the Institution. All grants must be made in line with the general strategy set by the Trustee Board of the Institution. A report must be produced by each Young Member that attends the Visit. The Railway Divisional Board to select the "Best Paper" and forward to Trustee Board Awards Committee. Trustee Board Awards Committee must be in receipt of "The Best Paper" from the Young Members' Technical Visit by 31st August each year.
