View the Food Engineering NewsletterView forthcoming events organised by the Process Industries DivisionBy: Mike Machin, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Consultant, Fluor Ltd The Pharmaceutical Committee of the Process Industries Division, ran an event in October entitled Pharmaceutical Engineering Design for Compliance. The event was divided into two sections one dealing with materials, the other with equipment design.
The main tenor of the event was that compliance is not an exact science, and that having a better understanding of the requirements would enable savings to be made, when specifying or designing equipment and facilities.
After a Keynote speech from Deputy Chairman Bob Hayes, the speakers introduced the audience to a new stainless steel which could perform like 316 but at less cost, and then to some surprising uses of copper.
Presentations on the uses of thermoplastics and the regulations surrounding them followed by the fundamentals of lubricants, and what was a compliant grease or oil finished off the morning presentations.
The afternoon session started with a presentation on materials handling compliance followed by presentations on design for cleaning and cleaning systems.
A lengthy and enthusiastic question and answer session ended what was a very packed and very informative day.
