There are nine major UK oil refineries with a distillation capacity of around 88 million tonnes per annum, operated by Esso, BP, Petroplus, Shell, Total FinaElf, Conoco and Texaco.

- Oil and gas from the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) provided 70% of the nation’s total energy demand in 2006, avoiding imports costing £30 billion;
- Provided 96% of the UK’s oil needs and 92% of its gas needs;
- The industry employs 480,000 across the UK: Employment is spread across the UK, with over a 100,000 skilled jobs in Scotland directly employed by the industry

“The chemical industry in the UK contributes over £5 billion annually to the country’s balance of payments from a gross output of £50 billion. It accounts for 1.5% of UK GDP, 11% of manufacturing’s gross value added, and employs some 202,000 highly skilled people directly as well as supporting several hundred thousand related jobs throughout the economy nationwide.”
