UK Bulk Handling Industry Facts

The total UK manufacturing sales for the whole lifting and handling equipment sector in 2005 was recorded at £3,234,836,000. The sales of individuals types of equipment were as follows:
- Bucket type continuous action elevators and conveyors 6,441,000
- Belt type continuous action elevators and conveyors 131,249,000
- Roller conveyors 54,315,000
- Continuous action elevators and conveyors 71,256,000

A recent MBD forecast that the overall, demand for mechanical lifting & handling equipment was set to increase by 3% in real terms between 2005 and 2009

Keynote reported that despite the mechanical handling industry being an input supplier to most of the UK’s manufacturing sectors, that it was a relatively minor employer. In 2001 it found that there were 1,325 VAT-registered enterprises in this sector. Only 65 of these firms employed more than 100 staff. It reported that conveyors and elevators held the largest share of the mechanical handling market after fork-lift trucks. The main products in the conveyor market are belt elevators and conveyors, roller conveyors, and pneumatic bulk-material conveyors.
