Compliance with the ATEX directives has been mandatory for new equipment since June 2003, and for existing equipment since July 2006. There is still a great deal of uncertainty surrounding this legislation and its impact on design, testing, certification and operation of equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres for both users and manufacturers.

The IMechE symposium will explore the latest developments from industry and academia in powder and particulate solids handling in a number of priority areas of research and innovation including storage and flow, characterisation, pneumatic conveying and mechanical handling. The focus of the 3rd Bulk Solids Europe conference will be on energy. It is fascinating to realise that on the one hand energy is required to power bulk solids handling systems and that on the other hand bulk solids handling systems are required to supply the coal or biomass for power stations.
