[November 2006] The Pressure Systems Group (PSG) was very pleased to award the Donald Julius Groen Prize to Glyn Hawkins who has been the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Principal Specialist Inspector responsible for steam boilers and systems, pressurised hot water systems, and compressed air systems from 1995 until recently.

His helpful and friendly contribution to the work of the SAFed Technical Committee TC1 (Pressure Systems) was extremely beneficial in the development of guidelines for the examination of shell boilers, particularly the work on peaking of boiler shells where he sponsored and controlled extensive finite element assessment work carried out by the Health and Safety Laboratory. This work led to improved inspection and manufacturing procedures and much safer shell boilers.

He has also been a major player on British and European Standards development representing the HSE on several committees and looking after the UK interests at a European level where he is held in high regard by all parties committed to safe economical operation of pressure
equipment. His advice was highly valued in European Standardisation committees including CEN/TC 269 (Shell and Water-tube Boilers) where he introduced and supported latest technological developments in control philosophy, blended with practical engineering and economic considerations without sacrifice to overall safety.

He has written and presented several excellent papers at a number of PSG seminars, and has always been very supportive of the work of the PSG. The chairman of the PSG will be presenting Glyn with his well deserved Prize at a lunch after the Committee meeting on 15 December 2006.
