View the latest pressure systems news[November 2006] The
Pressure Systems Group (PSG) of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers recently celebrated 20 years of success in running CPD courses on the design of pressure system equipment. These courses, offered in conjunction with the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde and with the support of the British Standards Institute, have trained over two and a half thousand engineers world-wide.
When conceived by Professor John Spence, a past President of the Institution and the late Professor Alwyn Tooth in 1986, the first course, 'Pressure Vessel Design', had over 50 delegates and was so oversubscribed it had to be re-run later that year. In addition, it drew engineers with very diverse backgrounds with differing needs and so a series of tailor made courses emerged. The portfolio now comprises 8 in total and addresses various pressure equipment codes and standards, components and products, systems and analysis techniques. The master course, now 'Pressure Vessel Design - Concepts & Principles', continues to run each June and has been exported to many countries around the world, viz. USA, Brazil, Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Egypt, Poland and Norway.
These courses are particularly appropriate for engineers working in the wider pressure systems industry. They encompass the full spectrum of applications, however much of the worked examples are derived from real problems associated with the petro-chemical and off-shore oil and gas industries.
Much of the success of these courses is due to the
Pressure Systems Group committee, many of whom lecture on the courses. In addition, thanks are due to the various lecturers from both academia and industry who have participated on the programme over the past twenty years. The courses continue to run successfully on an annual basis under the direction of Dr David Nash, Senior Lecturer and Vice Dean at Strathclyde and presently Vice Chairman of the PSG Committee.
Courses are run on an annual basis but can be customised and where appropriate, tailored for company delivery on site. Dates are fixed each January and details of courses and content can be found on the
PSG events pages or by emailing
psg@imeche.org Dr David Nash, PSG Vice Chairman.
