View the latest power industries news [June 2007] It is clear that Nuclear Power Plants are once again being build in numbers all around the world but one of the key challenges will be to attract young engineers into this industry. To address this issue the British Nuclear Energy Society’s Young Generation Network (YGN) was formed to promote communication and organise activity both nationally and with the other young generation networks around the world. The YGN, which now has 400 members is the UK, arranges a full annual programme including conferences, seminars, lectures and social events. It responds to government consultations and the national media, contributes articles to journals on nuclear related issues and provides speakers for national and international events. It also organises site visits, assists with major industry conferences and develops links with educational and training groups, including presenting in schools and taking part in debates with young political groups in parliament. YGN members have also been interviewed on Radio and appeared in educational videos used in the national curriculum’s GCSE syllabus. The network encourages more young people to join and stay within the industry by creating support networks for personal developments as well as encouraging continuous learning about the wider nuclear industry. One of the events hosted last year was the ‘Rough Guide to the Nuclear Industry’ at Sellafield. This consists of lectures and visits to nuclear reprocessing, waste management and research and development facilities at the Sellafield site. The programme provides a good overview of the nuclear industry for graduates and new members. Another annual seminar the YGN hosts is the Reactor Seminar which gives an insight into the different aspect of reactor operations including several site visits. All those involved with the YGN are given the opportunity to get involved in the industry at all levels and gain the benefit of having their voice heard. The majority of companies within the nuclear industry support the organisation and recognise the support that the YGN has to offer.
