2005 The IMechE Joseph Bramah Medal for 2005 has been awarded to Professor Matti J. Vilenius, Head of IHA TUT / IHA, for 'Outstanding Achievement Particularly in the Field of Hydraulic Engineering' .
2004 The IMechE Bramah Medal for 2004 has been awarded to Prof Hans-Heinrich Harms, Director of the Institute Für Landmaschinen und Fluidtechnik, Technical University, Braunschweig, Germany. As the result of Prof Harms' outstanding technical ability and his excellent leadership, the Institute is the leading Centre in Germany for research into Agricultural Machinery and more generally in the area of construction machines.
The Medal was presented to Prof Harms by Prof Kevin Edge at the Scandinavian Fluid Power Conference in Linköping, Sweden on 2nd June, 2005. In his acceptance speech, Prof Harms said that he was truly honoured by the Award and spoke of Joseph Bramah's early training in the practical aspects of agriculture, which reflected his own background. He then went on to tell the audience of the many contributions that Bramah had made as an engineer and inventor, most notably the hydraulic press. Moreover, he reminded us that we all encounter at least two of Bramah's inventions as we go about our daily activities: the patent lock…. and the water closet!
