Mike Strickland, University of Southampton:
Enhanced Preclinical Assessment of Total Knee Replacement

Comments from Simon Collins, Group Technical Director, Corin Group
"Corin were pleased to attend the recent Medical Engineering Student Project Competition at the IMechE headquarters in London and award a prize for the student who demonstrated the best presentation skills. As last year the standard of presentational skills was very impressive. It is very important, particularly in today’s economic climate for engineers to be able to communicate their ideas at the highest level. Without such skills, opportunities can be missed and technologies may struggle to gain momentum as the message of the benefits may seem unclear. This is a great event that I thoroughly enjoyed and look forward to supporting in the future."
Mike Strickland biography and inspirations
Mike Strickland originally studied systems engineering at Loughborough university, working in the aerospace industry on a range of projects involving aerodynamics, avionics and control-system modelling, and in academia on projects including robotics and electronic test & measurement systems.
After completing his undergraduate studies, he became interested in the application of engineering methods within the biological environment, and joined the University of Southampton for his PhD in orthopaedic biomechanics. His research combines statistical analysis methods with high performance computational modelling, producing virtual replications of experimental test rigs to better understand the pre-clinical test performance of implant devices. He has also worked with a major orthopaedics company to help deploy these new methods within the commercial R&D sector.
Mike Strickland comments
"It was a great pleasure to participate in the 21st annual student project competition. I was impressed and fascinated by the variety and quality of project-work being showcased, and felt very honoured to participate in such an impressive display of engineering talent."
"I felt highly privileged to receive the Corin Group Prize for Best Project Presentation; this was a tremendous endorsement and a great encouragement in my efforts to further extend and disseminate the research within my PhD. My thanks to Corin Group for sponsoring the prize, and to the Engineering in Medicine & Health Division at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for organising the awards day. My congratulations also to the other participants, whose research projects were of the highest quality, and left me inspired and encouraged that medical engineering has a great future in this country!"
