The Prizes and Awards are funded from the IMechE’s Trust Funds which comprise the legacies to the Institution under the wills of late members and sums of money allocated or donated to the Institution for specific purposes under Deeds of Trust.

The Engineering in Medicine and Health Division has a total budget allocation of £1,000 for distribution to recognise the achievements of engineers in the Division’s field of expertise. One or more recipients can be chosen up to the £1,000 budget allocation from the following three prizes (NB no prize should be less than £100):

• The Duncan Dowson Prize (Serial 260/1)
• EMHD Innovations Prize (Serial 260/2)
• EMHD Presentation Prize (Serial 260/3)

The Division also runs the Medical Project Competition with prizes between £500 and £750 open to recent graduates (2009) or a third/fourth year undergraduates working on a medical device project, or PhD students who graduated and passed between 2007 and 2009.

The Division also makes nominations to the Trustee Board Awards Committee for the IMechE's Major Prizes and Awards:

• The James Clayton Prize
• The Thomas Hawksley Gold Medal
• IMechE Special Needs Award
• The Safety Award in Mechanical Engineering
• The George Stephenson Prize
• The James Watt International Medal (Awarded biennially - next award 2010)
