The activities of the Manufacturing Division are co-ordinated by the Technical Advisory Committee drawn from the engineering community.

Professor Derek Sheldon (Chairman) is currently employed as the Principal Consultant and Managing Director of Derek Sheldon Consultants Ltd, Chartered Consultant Engineers, UK. Furthermore, the business has a multidisciplinary team of seven Associate Consultants Engineers who focus on Machinery Design & Manufacture. Until recently the Ford Professor in Automotive Systems and now Emeritus Professor of Engineering & Design at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge and Chelmsford, UK.
In addition he has held Engineering Directorships in UK Industry such as Manufacturing Director of T&N Technology Ltd & Technical Director of C J Williams Ltd, as well as senior Management/Professorial roles in Universities. These have included Lucas Professor & Dean of Engineering at Coventry University and Head of Mechanical & Production Engineering, University of Huddersfield, UK.
Richard Woods' experience has experience in a variety of areas. He was MD of Watson-Marlow Bredel Pumps (1996 to 2002) who make peristaltic pumps for sale throughout the world and Product Director with Spirax Sarco plc (1971 to 1996) responsible for the design, marketing and manufacture of fluid control products. Between 1969 and 1971 he was Project Engineer with Shell Chemicals UK involved with rotating machinery troubleshooting at sites like Carrington, Stanlow Refinery. Ptior to this he was a Development Engineer with Heenan & Froude involving design and development of engine test plant for customers like Sulzer (Winterthur), Ferrari, BRM, Lotus, Jaguar. He now operates a Technical Consultancy on vibration and rotating machine dynamics. Richard is happy to discuss a number of areas of special interest including:

Alan Fitzgerald was a machine tool designer for 7 years before moving into the IT industry, writing control system software for Kongsberg. After working for Scicon in IT Services for several years he worked for Computervision in Cad/Cam, and for Oracle - introducing their ERP product. During his 8 years with Syntegra (part of BT) he worked in Marketing and then several years in Mergers & Acquisitions. Alan now works for Kingston University in their Enterprise Exchange. As well as serving on the MID, Alan is an assessor for the MX program, and has worked as an IMechE Membership Interviews Consultant.
Mark Upton-Brown has worked for BOC Edwards part of the BOC Group since 1996, previously he worked for Timken, the US based Bearings and Steel company. He has managed a broad range of Operational, Engineering and Supply Management departments and lead a number of projects in these and related disciplines to increase business performance or reduce costs. He is currently developing Supply Management in New Product Introduction. He chaired the Management of Manufacturing Technical Activity Committee in the early 90's and has been a member of Council and the Finance Board. He is currently Vice Chairman of the Manufacturing Divisional Board and a Member of the MEP Ltd Management Board.
Mark Eaton MSc MBA MIET FIOM CEng FRSA Having started his career designing weapon systems, Mark has held a number of senior operational roles within blue chip companies before moving into consultancy where he led numerous public programmes, including several programmes for the DTI to support manufacturing and others dealing with skills, design and knowledge transfer. In 2004, his work led to the award of the Viscount Nuffield Medal for his contribution to manufacturing. Latterly, Mark is Managing Director of a growing consultancy specialising in sustainable change within the NHS, Armed Forces and Manufacturing as well as providing research and policy support to a number of public bodies both in the UK and overseas. Mark is Chair of the IET’s Manufacturing Network and also Chair of the IOM’s Operations Development Panel.
Duc Truong Pham OBE, FREng, FSME, BE, PhD, DEng (Canterbury, NZ), FIET, FIMechE, is Professor of Computer-Controlled Manufacture and Director of the Manufacturing Engineering Centre at Cardiff University.
His research interests encompass the areas of intelligent systems and advanced manufacturing engineering. These cover knowledge-based systems for manufacturing design and quality control, robot vision and automated visual inspection systems, neural networks for non-linear systems identification and control, rapid prototyping and tooling, micro fabrication, virtual reality and multi-media intelligent product manuals. Noel Hensman spent 30 years with ICI in various Engineering positions covering many process plants culminating as the Site Project Manager for a manufacturing facility. As part of this, he worked closely with manufacturing improvement and quality improvement teams and became involved in the improvement of manufacturing processes on the site and the issues that contributed to the effectiveness of people.
Since then, he has worked in business support for over 9 years primarily with manufacturing companies (from sub contractors to product manufacturers) where innovative thinking is key to bringing about the appropriate culture change in a company for improving one or all of business management, people effectiveness and process efficiency.
Bob Shanks Was educated at Brighton (Mech.Eng), Imperial (Thermo), Warwick (Management). He spent his career in manufacturing companies mainly associated with vehicles and machine tools. He has held a variety of positions but spent the majority of his time in design and manufacture of small batch specials, with profit responsibility. He has contributed to IMechE over a number of years being Past Vice Chairman of the Manufacturing Industries Divisional Board and a supporter of the MX awards.
Now retired, his main interest is being Leader of the Imagineering Foundation which aims to promote technology and manufacturing through Fun to young people by means of Imagineering Fairs and Imagineering Clubs. Despite this he does occasional consulting on management and manufacturing.
Dr. Kerry J Mashford BSc(Hons) MSc PhD MSt CEng FIMechE FRSA Kerry Mashford started her professional life as a mechanical engineer in power engineering, before taking an academic post in the College of Manufacturing at Cranfield. Kerry joined Unilever to develop its activities in machine design and technology, later moving into manufacturing and supply chain strategy and the development of new technologies and product design methodologies for FMCG manufacturing. In her last role at Unilever she was responsible for the identification, development and introduction of technologies to enable agile and sustainable manufacturing. She co-founded Interfacing Ltd., an engineering design and consultancy company involved initially in product design in the areas of embedded systems, multimedia products, home automation and intelligent buildings, building a demonstrator ‘Smart Home’ for the 1994 Future World exhibition in Milton Keynes. From 1999 to 2001 Kerry was Director of the UK Government’s Manufacturing Foresight programme exploring potential future direction for UK manufacturing with stakeholders from industry, government and academia. In parallel, she undertook post graduate study in interdisciplinary design of the built environment, with a particular focus on the contribution of technology to sustainable development. After this, Kerry pursued a portfolio career, as a coach and change agent for companies and consortia operating in manufacturing, technology and constructions sectors, majoring on strategy, new business development, agile manufacturing, mass customisation, new product introduction, complexity and variety management, frequently underpinned by disruptive technology and driven by the opportunities presented by an increasing global interest in sustainability. Kerry joined Arup in March 2006, as Head of Sustainable Manufacturing & Construction with projects across the world on products, processes, policy and on economic development based on sustainable technologies. She is currently Director of a £2m ERDF project in the UK to create a sustainable off-site manufacturing supplier base in the Thames Gateway, simultaneously contributing to economic regeneration and providing dwellings for the extensive development in the area. She is a visiting academic and steering group member of Cardiff University’s IMRC, is a member of IMechE Council, a lead assessor for the Manufacturing Excellence Awards and has represented the IMechE and IET on the government’s Manufacturing Forum. John Garside has a wide experience in Aerospace, Automotive and other Industrial businesses, having held senior executive posts at Dunlop, GKN, and Lucas - Automotive, Applied Technology and Aerospace.
In 1993, as Programme Director for Lucas Aerospace, he was responsible for driving major change programmes and designing the fundamental business processes needed to run a process based organisation. In particular he was directly accountable for implementing business development and product introduction processes across Lucas Aerospace. These processes helped the company achieve ‘Most improved major aerospace company 1994 – 1998’ status, ranking it second in Competitiveness, in ‘Aviation Week and Space Technology’ 1999 ‘Best-Managed’ Companies Awards, published in the USA. On leaving Lucas, he was invited to become a Principal Fellow at Warwick Manufacturing Group, The University of Warwick. This has allowed him time to write two books ‘Plan to Win’ (Macmillan Business, 1998) and ‘Make it!’ (Butterworth Heinemann, 1999) capturing the knowledge he acquired improving European and American companies. He is a past Chairman of the Manufacturing Industries Board at the I Mech E and compiles their Manufacturing Excellence Awards self-assessment audit. He is also a Director of the Manufacturing Advisory Service in the West Midlands (MAS-WM) and was responsible for designing the operational processes used to deliver support to manufacturing based SME’s. This model has been acknowledged as the benchmark for other MAS organisations across the UK. Christopher Simpson was educated at Sheffield University and the London Business School where he is a Sloan Fellow. He is Managing Director of Simpson Associates, a small highly successful consultancy providing advice and support at Board level to engineering companies in the UK, USA, Germany and other European countries. He was previously Divisional Chief Executive of the Engineering Products Division of Yule Catto plc, and responsible for operating companies and manufacturing operations in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands & Eire. Before that, he was Chief Executive of the UK division of Gildemeister AG in Germany, the world's largest computer controlled metal cutting machine tool company. He is a past Chairman of the Manufacturing Division. Other responsibilities at the IMechE include Vice Chairman of the Manufacturing Excellence Awards, Member of the Board of the Manufacturing Excellence Awards in Germany and Chairman of the Management Group.
Tim Podesta is a BP Group Project Benchmarking Analyst with which company he is about to celebrate 27 years. BP is a leading global energy company, employing 100,000 people worldwide with a turnover of $200bn in the oil, gas and energy sectors. He is proud to be a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of IMechE with a broad career starting in engineering roles and developing in commercial leadership roles, always built on a strong technical foundation.
He is now in an expert role in the central Group Projects function which reports directly to the Group Head of Projects Graham Cattell and through to the EVP for Safety & Operations John Mogford.
PETER FLINN MA, MBA, CEng, FIMechE has worked in manufacturing industry throughout his career, in the aircraft, rail, commercial vehicle and process industries. He now has his own consultancy business and is supporting the Government’s Technology Strategy Board, in the area of manufacturing. His most recent line role was as Managing Director of Vectra Group Limited, an engineering consultancy specialising in safety work for hazardous industries. Prior to this, he was MD of ABB Engineering Services, also an international technical consultancy, which was bought by ABB from ICI in 2001. His role there was to integrate this business into ABB. and to develop its position in the market place. Previously in ABB, he was MD of ABB Support Ltd and first joined ABB in Derby in 1991 as Head of Engineering of what is now Bombardier UK. He was closely involved in the restructuring of the rail company after ABB took full control, setting up and running the Bodyshell Division of which he was Director, based in York. In his earlier career, he worked for Leyland DAF Limited, the commercial vehicle organisation, in Lancashire and Scotland, his last position being Quality Director for the UK part of the company, He previously held positions in product development and manufacturing. Prior to this, he started his working career with the military aircraft division of British Aerospace. Peter is a chartered engineer by profession, having a degree from Cambridge University, an MBA and having attended an international management programme at Harvard Business School. He is an active member of the Institution and has been chairman of the Manufacturing Industries Division. He was also on the CBI Manufacturing Council between 1999 and 2002
