Re-organisation of the Management Group
Plans are in hand to re-organise the way in which the Management Group of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers supports the needs of members who have an interest in consulting. Under previous arrangements a separate sub-group dealt with consultants’ interests, and reported to the Management Group Board. Proposals to be put to the October meeting of the Management Group Board would see the interests of consultants dealt with at the main Management Group Board and events ( RSS feed )sub-committee, thus integrating consultants’ activities more closely with other activities of the Management Group. The mission of the management group is also to be reviewed and amended as appropriate to reflect this change.
If the proposal is approved by the Board it would also include a greater representation of consultants on it. It is envisaged that new Board members would represent the interests of consulting businesses from the smallest to the largest. The Chair of the Management Group would continue to represent consultants’ interests at the Technical Strategy Board.
An important part of the Management Group’s activities is the consultants database – a register of consultants who are members of the Institution and to which anyone can obtain access to view the listing. As IMechE members the consultants are by default obligated to abide by the Institution’s professional standards. Under the proposed re-organisation one of the urgent actions to be undertaken by the Management Group will also be to ensure that appropriate steps are taken to maximise the accessibility of the database to those interrogating it, and to implement any investment needed for this to be achieved. The Board will also review how to generate greater visibility for the database within the Institution, the engineering community and business at large.
Overall the proposals, if agreed, should result in both better integration of consultants’ interests with the other activities of the Management Group, better support for professional consultants, and also more effective use of the consultants’ database.
