IMechE Aerospace North West Prize

The Aerospace Industries Division – IMechE Aerospace North West has established a prize award for the best poster and associated presentation submitted on an Aerospace related topic.

Poster presentations feature strongly in seminars and conferences. The aim of a poster is to outline a project or piece of work in an easily presented and understandable way; leading to a heightened level of interest and engagement with subsequent interchange between the author and the readers. The essence of a good poster is a succinct and visually engaging presentation with a distinctive message.

The competition is open to students, graduates and associate members of the Institution (or other professional bodies such as the Institute of Engineering and Technology, The Royal Aeronautical Society) and non-members employed in industry. All entrants must be undergraduates or recent graduates.

Poster Requirements & Awards

The objective is to prepare and submit a poster that outlines a programme, project or specific piece of work in which the applicant (or applicants) has been personally engaged or involved. It shall be in a format that is visually attractive, informative and stimulating. It must cover an aerospace related topic. A judging panel comprising senior representatives of the aerospace industry in the North West will select a short-list of six poster submissions.

The authors of these posters will be invited to give a brief presentation to a specially convened IMechE Aerospace North West meeting on the topic presented by their poster. The award criteria will include the originality and content of the poster together with the quality of the verbal presentation. The presentations shall be of ten minutes duration covering the objectives, content and achievements of the work covered by the poster, followed by up to ten minutes of questions. No part of the submission may be deemed classified as the organisations reserve the right to publish all entries, the biographies and photographs of entrants in any publication and/or website.

Prizes

The principal award will be £500 and the two runners-up awards will be £250, one from industry and one from academia. All finalists will receive a certificate of merit.

Poster Format

The poster size shall be A1, comprising eight panels of A4 size if required. The poster may take the form of any combination of illustrations, tables, graphics, text and must be presented in hard copy. The poster must include the author's name, affiliation, address and should include the IMechE Aerospace North West logo in a prominent position. A separate letter from a responsible person should be provided certifying that it is his/her own work and that the use of supporting material from other sources has been authorised and acknowledged.

Closing Date

The closing date for the receipt of entries is 31st July.

Presentations will be arranged in September and prize winners selected in October. The Institution may request a further presentation by the award winners – possibly to a later Aerospace Industries Division Board meeting for which travel expenses will be paid.
